Musician Mothica talks about her childhood of abuse and addiction, and how she overcame it with music

10th November 2019

Blue Hour is a short film by film maker Hunter Lyon, about a musician named Mothica. It’s a documentary narrated by Mothica herself, as she talks about a childhood of abuse and addiction. Fortunately she was able to find a way out through music, and the film is a beautiful accompaniment to her story. Blue Hour is the name of Mothica’s debut album.

We were lucky enough to catch up with Mothica director Hunter Lyon and were able ask him some more about his film.

MadeGood – Please tell me a bit yourself as a film maker. Is this a typical example of your work?

Hunter – I think there’s some aspects of my style that find it’s way into everything I try to make, like this piece in particular; the tones and visual side of things I think has a through line to my other work. This project was definitely different than what I normally do, which is music videos, but it was cool to do this because of how different it is than what I normally do.

MadeGood – How did you find Mothica, and what made you want to make a film about her? Did you specifically want to make a film highlighting issues of abuse? What was she like to work with?

Hunter – Mothica approached me about doing an album trailer / mini documentary type piece in promotion for her upcoming album. We have some mutual friends and I think visually our style and vision for what this was supposed to be aligned a lot. She wrote the script which really provided the blueprint for what we wanted to shoot, which allowed us to be intentional with every scene we shot. It was a really great opportunity to help tell this story.

MadeGood – I see you worked with a DP on this film, do you often work together? Do you operate a camera on set, or do you leave that all to your DP. Please tell me a bit more about your working dynamic.

HunterBrandon Waddell is a good friend of mine and a fantastic DP who was one of the mutual connections that connected Mothica and I. This was our first time working together in this capacity, previous to this he had gaffed a few projects for me in LA. He lives in Oklahoma so it was the perfect opportunity to finally collaborate. We shared duties on this one in terms of operating, I would say I’m a pretty heavy cinematography-based director, but all of the shots were a collaborative effort to achieve what we both wanted. Going into this we had a few conversations where we said that each shot needed to say something and be intentional, in order to make this special. We have similar styles but his eye is definitely a reason why this project looks a little different than some of my other work.

MadeGood – What are you working on next.

Hunter – Releasing my first passion project soon as well as a few music videos that are in various stages of production. Trying to find projects that speak to me and fit within the world I’m trying to build.

MadeGood – Nice one Hunter, thanks for answering my questions. Passion project sounds exciting, please remember to send it over when it’s done. Good luck!
