Replace A Bike’s Caliper Rim Brake Shoe
Introduction
There is not much adjustment with caliper brake shoes. Sliding up and down, and tangental adjustments are the only adjustments you can make.
Step 1
Remove Caliper Brake Old Shoes
Remove the old caliper brake shoes, taking note of the positions of any washers.
Step 2
Grease Threads
Grease the retaining threads on the new caliper brake shoes. Fit them in position and half tighten.
Pro Tip
The block on the side where the cable attaches moves down as it wears so the shoe needs to be set as high on the rim as possible. The block on the other side moves up as it wears so the shoe needs to be set as low on the rim as possible.
Step 3
Check Operation
Work the caliper brake and check the position of the block on the rim. With the shoe pressed against the rim half tighten to hold the shoe still.
Step 4
Tighten
Check again. Spin the wheel to check the position of the block all round the rim. If the block is okay clamp the shoe with your thumb and finger to prevent it turning and lock the bolt fully.
