Mount A Bike’s Rear Wheel With Quick Release Skewer
Introduction
Mounting a rear wheel with quick release skewer is simple, although the gears make it a slightly more complicated
Step 1
Align the chain
Put the chain onto the fastest sprocket and watch the axle into the slots on each side where it fits. The weight of the bike will help you get the wheel in exactly the right place.
Step 2
Check the Position of the rear wheel
With your head on the bike's centreline check the rear wheel is centred in the frame.
Step 3
Tighten the Quick Release Skewer
Rotate the handle of the quick release skewer through 180 degrees from the open position to the closed position. Close the brakes and check they're working well.
Pro Tip
Tighten the Quick Release Skewer
For security reasons a quick release skewer may be replaced with a skewer that needs a hexagonal key, or a unique tool, to lock it. The connection through a hollow axle means that both sides tighten together. Pack the tool with your puncture tools.
