Connect A Bike’s Chain With A Chain Tool

Introduction

On a derailleur gear system the chain shifts between cog wheels of different sizes. The system adapts to the demands for different amounts of chain with a spring-loaded arm that moves the bottom jockey wheel backwards to increase or decrease the path the chain must follow.

Place

To reconnect the chain thread it back onto the bike and hold it in place with a wire bent into a ‘C’ shape; a dead spoke with the head cut off is ideal.

Step 2

Prepare chain tool - Connect A Bike’s Chain With A Chain Tool

Prepare chain tool

Realign both ends of the chain in the slot on the chain tool further from the punch with the holes aligned. The rivet sticking out should be faced toward the punch.

Step 3

Connect - Connect A Bike’s Chain With A Chain Tool

Connect

Drive it back through the chain by screwing in the punch on the chain tool. Check how far to push by comparing the back of the link with others. The position of the driven pin needs to match the height of the others.

Step 4

Check - Connect A Bike’s Chain With A Chain Tool

Check

When the head of the rivet viewed, from the back, matches its fellows, retract the screw and remove the chain from the chain tool. Check the link you’ve just been working on it may be stiff and unable to flex like the others. If it’s stiff it needs to be spread.
