How To Make A Brood Box Or Honey Super For A Beehive
Preparing The Parts
Before you begin with this tutorial, you’ll need make sure you have all the individual parts ready. You can either pre-order these from a supplier, or manufacture them yourself. A free set of plans to do this can be downloaded from here
What You Will Need
In addition, you will need:
- A hammer.
- Some pva wood glue.
- A tri square.
- A pencil.
- Some gimp pins.
- And some 3/4 inch nails.
Marking The Side Sections A
To begin, take one of the larger rectangular side panels. Mark a pencil line on one edge, in line with the centre of one of the routed grooves
Use your tri-square to extend this line along the width of the flat side of the panel. Repeat this pro-cess on the opposite end of the panel, so you now have two lines on the flat side of the panel that are in line with the centre of the routed grooves.
Attaching The Cross Brace
Take one of the top rail sections. These are the squarer of the two types of rail. Glue one end, and insert into the side panel as shown.
You may need to gently hammer into place. Repeat the process for the remaining rail, on the opposite side of the panel.
Gluing The Cross Brace
Glue the inside of one of the grooves, and the Inside of the nearest rail.
Take one of the other side pieces, with the angled edge, and insert it into the glued groove as shown.
Attaching Side Sections B
Make sure you line up the top edge, and the bot-tom edge. Repeat on the opposite side.
Placing The Last Side Section
Glue the protruding ends and place the last remaining side on top. You will probably need to hammer this gently into place.
Checking The Box Is Square
At this point, it’s worth checking your super is square against your tri square.
First Set Of Nails
Now hammer three nails along each of the 4 pen-cil lines you drew earlier.
Gluing Bottom Braces
Take one of the bottom rails, with the angled edge. Glue along the length of the inside edge, as shown. And on the inside edges of the both ends.
Attaching Bottom Braces
With the angled edge facing in, slot the rail be-tween the grooves on the side of the super. Again, you’ll probably need to hammer this in.
Repeat with the last remaining rail, until all the parts are in place.
Nailing The Braces
Hammer one nail into each end of each rail.
Final Set Of Nails
To finish, hammer four nails into each rail from the inside of the box.
